Frequently Asked Questions

How was NeuropathyRx® developed?

Diabetic neuropathies are a consequence of long term hyperglycemia and occur whether the diabetes is insulin dependent or not. In patients with juvenile diabetes these problems arise in the third through fifth decade and in type two diabetes usually after the fifth decade of life.

There are multiple characteristics used to classify diabetic neuropathy including whether they are symmetric or asymmetric, sensory or autonomic, mononeuropathy or polyneuropathy, and entrapment neuropathy or not. Many patients have mixed varieties of neuropathy involving the sensory nerves of the distal limbs and the autonomic nervous system. Autonomic neuropathies can result in disturbances of gastrointestinal, sexual and vasomotor functions. Many of the sensory neuropathies involve pain and the pain is frequently described as burning and numbness. These symptoms interfere with sleep, daily activities and quality of life.

Three primary theories have been proposed to explain the chronic complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). The first is that a high level of intracellular glucose leads to nonenzymatic glycosylation of protein molecules from the interaction of glucose with amino groups forming advanced glycosylation end products (AGEs). AGEs result in numerous deleterious consequences including glomerular dysfunction, acceleration of atherosclerosis, dysfunction of endothelium, reduction of nitric oxide synthesis, and alteration of extracellular matrix.

The second hypothesis is that chronic high levels of glucose result in excessive metabolism via the sorbitol pathway. Normally glucose is metabolized via glycolysis after phosphorylation. When the cell is confronted with high levels of glucose and the normal metabolic pathway is saturated, sorbitol levels increase via the enzyme aldose reductase resulting in altered intracellular redux potential. A third theory is that hyperglycemia increases oxidative stress and free radical generation.

While the treatment of diabetic neuropathy has improved with the application of antiepileptic drugs and antidepressants it still remains frustrating. Most of the commonly used medications have anticholinergic side effects or cause sedation. At best they are only partially effective because they do not treat the underlying cause of the neuropathy but only the symptoms. The goal of this study was to determine if we could improve patients’ reports of pain and numbness with the utilization of nutritional supplements that may partially address the causes of diabetic complications.

We selected five nutritional supplements on the basis of their activity and application to the theories of diabetic complications revealed by extensive data mining of the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed electronic catalog of medical research. NeuropathyRx® contains N-acetyl-cysteine(NAC), alpha-lipoic-acid (ALA), L-carnitine (LCA), vitamin C and selenium. NAC is a reducing agent, a potent antioxidant and serves as a major precursor to the antioxidant glutathione. It is through this mechanism that it protects the liver from overdoses of acetaminophen. It also protects the kidneys from contrast induced nephropathy. Glutathione also appears to reverse the early effects of glycosylation and therefore the formation of AGEs.

Alpha-lipoic-acid is a potent antioxidant involved in metabolic reactions in the mitochondria and energy production. In animal models of diabetes it reverses the decrease in nerve blood flow. LCA helps correct elevated sorbitol levels in rat models of diabetes. Selenium is a potent antioxidant that works synergistically with vitamin E. It can be argued that vitamin C is the most important water soluble antioxidant. It scavenges both nitrogen and oxygen reactive species. It may also have a beneficial effect on the production of sorbitol and its metabolites in the hyperglycemic state.

Does NeuroapthyRx® really work? Why does it work? What does it do?

Yes, NeuropathyRx® really works, our study and the literature on the individual nutrients in NeuropathyRx® is very impressive. What sets our product apart is that we have put together in one formula the five best vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. That way you get the benefit of multiple excellent compounds for diabetic neuropathy. See our supporting literature on the website. It is not only Neuropathy Solutions who have performed studies on the products. Other scientists around the world have also studied the compounds in NeuropathyRx® and have drawn the same conclusion—it works.

Does NeuropathyRx® actually repair the nerves?

Each nerve bundle that supplies sensation to our hands and feet are composed of millions of individual nerve fibers. With diabetes these nerve fibers begin to die at different rates. Some are “sick” but not yet dead, others have completely died. What NeuropathyRx® does is restore health to the sick nerves and they begin to function again.  Unfortunately, the nerves that are dead remain dead. Nonetheless just recovering the function of the nerves not yet dead is frequently enough to decrease the numbness and pain and to allow the return of normal sensation.

Will I have to take it forever? If I stop taking it will my neuropathy return?

You can stop taking it when you get a good handle on your diabetes. If you can maintain your blood sugars within normal limits the literature shows you will have less complications including neuropathy. This means eating moderately, and including lots of fruits and vegetables to give your body the nutrients it needs to fight off the complications of diabetes.

Are you currently doing any studies? How can I participate in a study?

We are currently doing post marketing surveillance looking at patients who have been on NeuropathyRx® for over three months and hope to publish the results of a large number of patients in 2008. We are also working with major research institutions to do a study in cancer patients. To participate in the cancer study you would have to be a patient at the medical center we will work with.

Are you researching any new products to treat other conditions?

We are always looking at the effects of nutritional intervention and pain management. We hope to have other projects this coming year, 2008, in what we call the somatic disorders—irritable bowel, fibromyalgia and migraines.

Can I use NeuropathyRx® if I’m not diabetic?

There is fairly good evidence that products in NeuropathyRx® promote a healthy nervous system. We have had a lot of our elderly patients tell us it helps them think more clearly. Remember NeuropathyRx® raises levels of glutathione a potent cellular antioxidant, which can be beneficial in preventing many disorders.

How does NeuropathyRx® differ from traditional medications used to treat diabetic neuropathy?

NeuropathyRx® is different from traditional medications used to treat diabetic neuropathy because it is composed of only natural vitamins and minerals. Prescription drugs used to treat diabetic neuropathy can themselves can have unwanted reactions, only cover up the symptoms, do not treat the underlying problem and interfere with other medications. NeuropathyRx®’s® natural components, in the doses and combinations that we provide, are free of side effects and do not interfere with other drugs. In addition NeuropathyRx® is far less costly than prescription medications and even less costly than many drug copays.

What side-effects may result from NeuropathyRx®?

NeuropathyRx® is virtually free of side effects, however some individuals who had very numb feet when they began taking NeuropathyRx® may develop painful feet as the nerve starts to heal. As the nerves heal sensations experienced may go from numbness to pain, and then gradually the pain will improve over time as the nerves continue to heal. We recommend staying with NeuropathyRx® for at least one full month to experience the full benefit.

If you develop heartburn, an upset stomach or diarrhea on NeuropathyRx®, stop taking it for two days. Start eating a good quality yogurt like Stoneyfield, the bacteria in yogurt protect the stomach. Resume NeuropathyRx® after two days at half strength of two pills per day. If your stomach tolerates two pills per day advance to three pills for three days. If that goes well then go back to four pills a day. Keep eating the yogurt everyday, it is important for proper digestion

Will my insurance cover NeuropathyRx®?

Insurance will not cover NeuropathyRx®. As physicians, we fight battles every day to help our patients get the prescription drugs and the s they need. Traditionally, insurance never covers nutritional supplements. Realizing patients with chronic diseases struggle to make ends meet, we have priced our nutritional products at a level where the complete program is very affordable. Our products cost less than many prescription copays.

How can proper nutrition help my diabetic neuropathy?

Solid nutrition is the cornerstone for good health. It appears that inflammation is a common link to many diseases including cancer and heart problems. Beneficial foods reduce inflammation and harmful foods increase it. Please see Dr. Gostine’s Nutrition Guide and how it helped him overcome his musculoskeletal pain so he could run the Boston Marathon. This diet can help diabetics by reducing spikes in blood glucose level. Dr. Gostine emphasizes a diet that is low glycemic, rich in antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, and foods that reduce the body’s baseline inflammation level.
