Vitamin B and Neuropathy

Many individuals have called our office wondering why our product has no B vitamins in it. The short answer is there is no evidence that they work. The most comprehensive review to date published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and available online at the National Institute of Health concluded “There are only limited data in randomized trials testing the efficacy of vitamin B for treating peripheral neuropathy and the evidence is insufficient to determine whether vitamin B is beneficial or harmful. There was some evidence that vitamin B is less efficacious than alpha-lipoic acid (one of the five ingredients in NeuropathyRx®) in the short-term improvement of clinical and nerve conduction study outcomes”

If you check our supporting studies, posted on our website and linked back to the NIH Library of Medicine you will see there are hundreds of studies supporting the ingredients in NeuropathyRx®. We also have our own study and have two ongoing studies that will extend the original study.

Folate and the B6 vitamin supplementation are examples of what we call a J-curve (see illustration on the right). While a little vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is good for you, in high doses B6 can cause neuropathy.

ALA Challenge

We see this commonly in medicine where a little bit of a substance leads to improved outcomes and reduced disease, but high doses leads to increased illnesses and poor outcomes. Alcohol is a good example. Moderate consumption of alcohol raises good cholesterol and can thin the blood. I always say “Have one drink of alcohol before you go to bed and you won’t die in your sleep”. However if we drink too much, the alcohol is toxic to the heart and can lead to heart failure and death.

With regards to folate supplementation, in the March 2008 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition a researcher concluded “Folate has a dual effect on cancer, protecting against cancer initiation but facilitating progression and growth of preneoplastic cells and subclinical cancers.” The concern is that if we have a microscopic cancer somewhere in our body folate could fuel its growth because many tumors are folate dependent for growth.

Consequently, if you want to take B vitamins, take the whole complex in modest doses. I do find the B vitamins are good for an energy boost in the afternoon and I occasionally take a B50 complex (very inexpensive) available at most pharmacies, health food stores and online.
