What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is defined as a disease or abnormality of the nervous system. These motor sensory and autonomic nerves connect the spinal cord to the skin, muscles, and internal organs. Neuropathy generally presents in the hands and feet as numbness, tingling, burning, and pain. The course of this disorder can vary from a slow progression over a number of years to a rapid onset that is severe and disabling.

Over 20 million Americans suffer from neuropathy with the largest population among older adults. Thirty percent of the cases are attributed to diabetes while another forty percent are caused by nutritional imbalances, toxins, tumors, heredity, or infection.
